West Sussex County Council logoWSCC News Release : Find out more about the proposed new footbridge for Shoreham

Date: 24 May 2011
Press Release Number: 4431

West Sussex County Council will be consulting on the proposed design of the replacement Shoreham Footbridge through a public exhibition during early June.

The exhibition will give the local community a chance to view and comment on the proposed bridge design.

The new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will replace the existing ageing bridge on Shoreham High Street, which is owned by West Sussex County Council.

The exhibition will be available at several locations in Shoreham between Friday June 3 and noon on Friday June 17 2011:

Representatives of the project team will be available to answer questions and listen to feedback at the Adur Civic Centre on Friday June 3 between 10am and 4pm and the Shoreham Centre on Wednesday June 15 between 10am and 6pm.

A contract worth up to £4 million to design and build the new bridge has been awarded to family-owned construction, civil engineering and property services company Osborne.

Funding is coming from the County Council and the Big Lottery Fund, who awarded charity Sustrans £50million to extend the National Cycle Network into towns and cities across the UK, providing everyday routes for pedestrians and cyclists.

Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council Deputy Leader with responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “We are excited that we are getting to the stage when we can see what the new bridge might actually look like. We want to involve local people and give everyone the chance to see for themselves, ask questions and give us their views.”

The proposed design has been put together by contractor Osborne and Engineering Consultancy Cass Hayward working with West Sussex County Council and a Steering Group comprising representatives of the local community including County and Adur Councillors, the Shoreham Beach Residents Association, the Shoreham Society and the Port Authority.

Construction of the bridge is expected to start next year and be completed in spring 2013.
